5 Best Coffee Spots in Utrecht

If you've left Amsterdam behind to explore the historic city of Utrecht, make sure to check out the Top 5 Best Coffee Spots in the area. As many of us do, the Dutch have a significant relationship with coffee. Ask any Dutch person for their choice of caffeinated beverage and they would most likely prefer a strong, black cup of coffee to start the day off. The relationship is probably most comparable to the British’s addiction to tea; that’s why it is no surprise to find coffee houses dotted across the country, especially in Utrecht. So when that caffeine craving hits you while you’re out and about in Utrecht, here are a couple of spots to duck in and get that cup of joe.

‘t koffieboontje

This small expresso bar delivers high-quality, flavorful and affordable coffee in every cup. Cleverly named after 'coffee bean' in Dutch, the Oudegracht location provides a beautiful space for student study sessions and friendly meet ups. With its popularity, they managed to expand to another space at the Gruttersdijk, which received an upgraded space with trendier furnishing and the perfect lounging vibe.

Find your next cup at Oudegracht 92 and Gruttersdijk 42 (opening hours: every day from 08:00-18:00)

Blackbird Coffee & Vintage Cafe

Part coffee shop, part vintage bike and furniture store, Edwin Plasmans and Willemijn van den Bovenkamp of Blackbird Coffee & Vintage Café wanted to create an easy-going space supporting the bike and coffee culture. They do this by serving some quality coffee (accompanied by mini stroopwafels), slow-pressed juice and a delicious selection of pastries. Coffee drinkers can admire the vintage racing bikes and classic furniture- all for sale and available for viewing on their Facebook page!

Located along the Oudegracht 222 (opening hours: Tuesday-Saturday: 10:00-18:00, closed Sunday & Monday).

Locals hold Broei near and dear to their hearts, and so there’s definitely something special brewing here. There are many reasons you should love Broei: the delicious menu of vegetarian and vegan dishes, their friendly staff, the enticing terrace on a sunny day, and the beautifully decorated space with hints of green. There’s one last thing to top it off; this vegetarian spot is also a great place to grab your coffee.

Located at Oosterkade 24 (opening hours: every day from 09:00-22:00).

On the corner of Maliestraat stands a green corner store, and inside you'll discover one of Utrecht's hidden neighborhood secrets. You'll get a sense of being in a traditional corner store, but replaced with an engaging and friendly barista who will make one of the best cups of coffees in Utrecht.

Located on Maliestraat 16.(opening hours: Tuesday-Friday 08:00-17:00, Sunday 10:00-17:00, closed Mondays).

Rocking Chair

As you can imagine, Utrecht’s city center is jammed with coffee shops. However, if you want to get out of the center for a little exploration, take a chance on Rocking Chair. This coffee shop is a staple for the locals living in the Tuinwijk neighborhood, so it’s all serious coffee business here. But not everything is serious about this place; the cozy atmosphere will make any coffee enthusiast come back for a second refill.

Located on Willem van Noortstraat 88 (opening hours: Weekdays: 08:00-17:30, Weekends: 09:00-17:30)
